Different cultures on wedding days

In a world that is becoming ever more interconnected and diverse, different cultures are playing an increasingly important role on wedding days. The question often arises, especially for couples with different cultural backgrounds: how can the respective traditions be combined gracefully and harmoniously without one culture appearing more dominant?

Incorporating rituals from different cultures

The first step in planning a multicultural wedding is understanding and appreciating the respective rituals. Whether it’s a Serbian “Kumstvo” ceremony, an Indian Mehndi ritual or the dance of the broom from African-American culture, it’s important to preserve the essence of these traditions. Here are some tips on how this can be achieved:

  1. open communication: discuss as a couple which rituals are particularly important to you. Not all traditions have to be included. Set priorities so that the day doesn’t seem overloaded.

  2. integrative design: Try to design the rituals in such a way that guests from the other culture feel included. For example, by providing explanations in the program booklet or during the ceremony so that everyone can understand the meaning.

  3. timing: Many rituals, especially religious ceremonies, can be time-consuming. Make sure you allow enough time without overloading the day. Depending on the number of rituals, it may also make sense to spread some elements over the previous days or over several ceremonies.

Balance between tradition and modernity

A crucial point in multicultural weddings is how much tradition you want to preserve and how modern the day can be. Couples should ask themselves which elements of their heritage they want to honor and which aspects of modernity they want to incorporate.

Rituals and traditional ceremonies can often be the centerpiece of the wedding, while more modern elements such as the decorations, music or catering can liven up the celebration. However, a wedding can also start traditionally but transition into a modern celebration – through a DJ, cocktail bar or modern dancing. Different cultures on the wedding day can enrich the special day in every way.

Working with wedding planners without prior cultural knowledge

As wedding planners, we may not know much about your particular culture. In such cases, it is important to work closely with us wedding planners as a couple or family and provide us with the necessary information so that we can plan for your culture. We are used to adapting to different wishes and are also interested in learning about new cultures.

Conclusion

Incorporating different cultures into a wedding is a beautiful way to celebrate the couple’s diversity and history. While a multicultural wedding requires a bit more planning and sensitivity, the results are often stunning and memorable. With the right preparation, a clear plan and good collaboration with wedding planners, such a celebration can be harmonious and respectful – creating a special day that combines both tradition and modernity.

«Von Anfang an fühlten wir uns verstanden und bestens begleitet. Mit einem besonderen Gespür für Details und dem perfekten Mix aus Tradition und Moderne hat das Team unsere Vorstellungen nicht nur umgesetzt, sondern sogar übertroffen. Jedes kleine Element wurde mit so viel Liebe gestaltet, dass unser großer Tag zu einem unvergleichlichen Erlebnis wurde.» Zitat von Tamara & Florinel

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the bridal couple Tamara & Florinel for the wonderful wedding. The wedding with Serbian and Romanian background was extremely interesting to plan and to get to know. It was a lot of fun.

As wedding planners, we do almost everything – but we deliberately do NOT take on the role of the wedding witnesses. However, a good best man or maid of honor does more than just “hold hands” and sign. Here are a few tips for witnesses:
