Reasons why a professional DJ is essential at your wedding

When couples are planning their wedding, the big decisions are often made quickly: the perfect venue, a talented photographer, a charming wedding speaker and stunning decorations – all of these are given top priority. This is understandable, as these elements will make the day unforgettable. However, one important aspect often remains in the background: the music and entertainment during the evening.

In this blog post, we would like to show you the reasons why a professional DJ is essential at your wedding. However, many bridal couples set their priorities in such a way that a DJ is only booked when the budget is almost spent. Unlike photographers, whose work can be easily assessed through pictures, the quality of a DJ often remains hidden – until the big day arrives. But this is exactly where it becomes clear how essential a professional DJ is. After dinner at the latest, the mood of the entire evening depends on whether the music and entertainment are excellent.

An experienced DJ will create a party that you and your guests will remember for many years.

In contrast to cheaper alternatives that often operate with cheap technology, poorly wired setups and predefined Spotify playlists, a professional invests in high-quality equipment, elegant setups and has a feel for your individual wishes.

To give you an even better idea of how important a professional DJ is, we asked experienced wedding DJ Markus Lutz about it. He has already played at over 600 weddings and shares his insights and experiences with you:

How do bridal couples find you?
Bridal couples mainly book me through recommendations. Whether it’s from service providers such as wedding planners, photographers or hotels, with whom I have already worked together many times. Many recommendations also come directly from couples who have already experienced me ‘live’ at a wedding. A lot also comes from Instagram and, as I said, a good network in the wedding and event industry helps, of course.

How do you know if you’re the right DJ for the bride and groom?
I can tell straight away because I always have a personal meeting, live or via Facetime. You can tell straight away whether the chemistry is right, because that’s very important for both sides. During these conversations, I always clarify what the expectations of the music/DJ are and adapt to the bride and groom.

How do you find out whether you can meet the bride and groom’s expectations?
My years of experience and good intuition allow me to tell straight away.

What preparations do you make before the wedding?
On the one hand, it’s very important that I familiarize myself with the venue. I go to the venue and take a close look at everything so that I can decide which equipment is right and whether additional lighting elements etc. are needed.
This also allows me to clarify everything on site, from the set-up time to the venue, so that the bride and groom no longer have to worry about this.
In addition to the personal consultation, which takes place at the very beginning, I contact the bride and groom again a week before the wedding to discuss the final details. Are there any changes to the times? What about speeches? Are there any other songs requested?

What conditions do you need to be able to perform as a professional DJ?
A power outlet! 🙂 Because I adapt completely to the space available. I bring everything myself! From sound equipment including an appealing table (framing), high-quality wireless microphones, as well as suitable lighting equipment for a great ambience and moving light for an unforgettable party!
In order to make it an unforgettable party, I advise my bridal couples on the size of the room, lighting conditions and room arrangement.

Are there any important questions that you clarify with the bride and groom before the wedding?
Absolutely. I discuss which music styles are desired or not. It’s also important to know whether there will be speeches from guests, the bouquet toss, the wedding cake and, of course, the first dance. If there are any specifics about the company, such as guests from other countries/cultures etc., I will discuss these with them.

Are there any issues that worry you about the industry in the future?
My customers are becoming more and more demanding. In my early days over 20 years ago, I traveled with 25 suitcases including CDs. I had the most important music with me. Fortunately, everything has become much more modern and the choice of music and access to music is huge. This also makes it easier to make international weddings – e.g. bridal couples from America – just as happy as weddings from Switzerland.
Some brides and grooms think they can simply replace the DJ with a playlist from a streaming provider such as Spotify. These platforms are great for background music. However, most bridal couples want an unforgettable party. It’s my job as a DJ to create a mood, to respond to the guests, to have personal contact if they have any requests, to sense the direction the party is taking – that’s what makes the difference.

How much time do you need from booking to the wedding?
I don’t need any preparation time at all. A meeting in which everything is discussed and I can get started.:)

How many weddings have you attended so far?
Oh, I’ve stopped counting because there are so many. I would estimate: over 600 weddings, 100 corporate events and 50 private occasions.

What do you like most about your job?
Music is my passion. There’s nothing better than making people happy at a wedding/event with music and giving them a great party.

How did you get into the DJ business?
A good 20 years ago, a friend at the time had a ‘mobile discotheque’ (that’s what it was called back then). I found that really exciting and that’s how I got started. Music has always been an important part of my family and I knew my way around all kinds of music. I attended a DJ school in Stuttgart for a year and still played records back then. I became self-employed through a catering company that regularly booked me for company events such as trade fairs and other corporate events. So I decided to specialize as a wedding and event DJ.

Many thanks to Markus Lutz, who told us why a professional DJ is essential at your wedding. His tips show what really matters.

A professional DJ not only has the right flair, but also the right equipment: high-quality sound equipment, aesthetic and clean setups without visible cables and lighting technology that creates atmosphere. This investment pays off, because at the end of the day, it’s the atmosphere that counts.

When planning your wedding, remember that the DJ is not only responsible for the music, but also for the magic that makes the evening unforgettable. Focus on experience, passion and expertise.
