Planning Early – Reasonable or Stressful?

Planning early – reasonable or stressful? This is a question many couples ask themselves when they’re newly engaged and looking forward to their dream wedding with excitement. Is it really necessary to start planning two years in advance? Or is it enough to start a year before?

We’ll break down the pros and cons of planning your wedding well in advance—so you can make an informed decision about what’s right for you.

The benefits of planning early

1. More choice & flexibility

The most popular venues are often booked up 12–18 months in advance—especially on Saturdays during the summer months. So if you decide early, you’re more likely to secure your preferred date at the venue that’s perfect for you.

The same goes for popular service providers like photographers, wedding officiants, or hair and makeup artists. Booking early means you secure the people with whom the chemistry is truly right.

2. Relaxed planning without time pressure

With more lead time, you can break down the planning into small, manageable steps. Instead of having to decide everything in just a few months, there’s enough room for breaks, rescheduling, and creative phases.

For example: In the first six months, you focus only on the venue and the budget. Then you’ll have time to focus on the color scheme, the decorations, or the dress. And yes—time for breaks is important, too!

3. Book early = often less expensive

Early-bird rates are available from some vendors or venues—especially if you’re getting married outside the peak season or on a weekday. You can also often get better prices on honeymoon flights or hotels for guests if you book well in advance.

Plus, you’ll have more time to compare the prices of individual vendors or products at your own pace—without any pressure. This way, you can carefully consider which services are most important to you and where it’s worth adjusting your budget to make your dreams come true.

4. Time for personalization and DIY

Do you want to design your own invitations, build a personalized welcome station, or even forge your own wedding rings? Then early planning is worth its weight in gold. This way, you avoid last-minute DIY projects right before the big day—instead, you create thoughtful details that truly reflect who you are.

The drawbacks of planning too far in advance

1. Tastes can change

You might love boho vibes with pampas grass today, but in a year you might discover a love for minimalist, modern designs. With such a long lead time, it’s completely normal for your style or color preferences to change.

So, for example, if you’ve already ordered stationery or bought decorative elements, the new concept might no longer fit—which leads to either compromises or additional costs.

2. Decisions “become outdated”

Some service providers change their offerings, exit the business, or evolve in a direction that no longer suits you. If you commit too early, it’s harder to switch gears later.

Trends also evolve quickly—what’s “in” today may feel outdated in two years.

3. Risk of planning fatigue

A common issue: After over a year of planning, the momentum fades. Anticipation is overshadowed by to-do lists, and focus is lost. Especially when decisions keep changing or getting delayed, a sense of stagnation sets in.

That’s why it’s important: Set milestones. Celebrate small successes. And treat yourself to a month off from planning every now and then.

4. Life changes

A lot can happen in 18 or 24 months: a new job, a move, a new addition to the family, or shifting priorities. The guest list can also change again over that timeframe. If you’ve already signed contracts or made deposits, this can create limitations. Flexibility in contracts or goodwill clauses in the event of a postponement are particularly helpful in such cases.

Conclusion: It’s all about balance

Planning early isn’t a requirement—but it’s a wonderful opportunity to design your own wedding with calm, heart, and plenty of individuality. The important thing is to keep track of everything, not put pressure on yourselves, and follow your own path. Because every wedding is as unique as you are.

If you decide to start planning early, be careful not to lock everything down right away. Leave room for growth—both stylistically and emotionally. That way, your anticipation stays alive.

They made clear decisions early on—from the venue and vendors to the schedule. As a result, the organizational framework was already set many months in advance. At the same time, they deliberately took their time for the creative part: the design process. They wanted to create something that truly suited them—and that is exactly what they achieved.

Dear Luana, dear Kay—thank you for your trust. It was a pleasure to accompany you on this journey.

Your on-site support was perfect. You stayed in the background yet were always there to offer support and guidance when needed. You were incredibly friendly and made this day so special for us, ensuring that everything turned out exactly as we’d imagined.” – Luana & Kay
